This first part begins with Pu La himself describing how he conceived ‘Batatyachi Chaal’ and what the response to the play was when it opened in 1958. After this 14-minute video, the actual play opens with Mr. Pant who decides to fast simply to shed some of his weight. However, the chawl residents interpret his decision as having several hidden motives, sadly unknown to Pant himself! What follows is a hilarious queue of advisors and sympathizers and, after being fed up of it all, Pant gives in and breaks his fast!
