Synopsis :

Madhav Singh Ghai along with two ex-college slackers, Gopal and Lucky who is mute, team up with college student, Laxman, to extort money from students as well as sell question papers in advance. The four are also on the run from a Garage owner to whom they owe money. While on the run one day, they come across a spacious bungalow occupied by a blind couple, Somnath and Mangala. They overhear that their grandson is to return from New York, and decide to con the couple and live in the bungalow in style. Laxman becomes the grandson, Sameer, while Gopal lends his voice to fool the couple. The four find that they have an attractive neighbor in Nirali and each of them comically propose their love to her. To complicate matters, a gangster is interested in a wooden sealed box in Somnath’s house. Hilarious chaos prevails when the hapless foursome find out that Somnath is already aware of them; the gangsters take over the house to claim the wooden box; and the garage owner is all set to recover his loan, at the same time Nirali also enters the scene to declare who she has chosen to be her husband.

Every so often a movie comes along which is made, in my opinion, just to keep the ‘bad movie’ genre alive. Stepfather is one of them. This movie, a remake of the 1987 slasher/thriller of the same name personifies predictability. Dylan Walsh plays the ’stepfather’ who preys on single mothers and eventually slays them all with dramatic brutality when they ‘disappoint’ him in his never ending quest for a ‘family’. Presently, Stepfather has found Susan who is a recently divorced mother of three children, Michael being the oldest who is perpetually suspicious of his new stepfather. A done to death story where ‘the stepfather’ goes on a killing rampage doing away with anyone who seems likely to threaten his anonymity and his new identity, Stepfather is more disappointing than it is entertaining or thrilling.

Trying hard to be a wolf in sheep’s disguise is Dylan Walsh who plays the stepfather. Yeah, he just annoys more than scares. Sela Ward as Susan gives women a bad name with her unsuspecting attitude and complete blind faith over a man she just met. Her character thoroughly put me off. Penn Badgley as Susan’s son Michael only offers his greek body to the screen every time he goes swimming which is very often. Unfortunately, he couldn’t pull off being the angst ridden teenager very well.

Music for the movie could have been a little more eerie which could have heightened the mood for some of the scenes, but it wasn’t. There was almost no gore for the brutality fans, little or no blood was spilled.
While I was on the edge of my seat, mind you with impatience and not fear, waiting for anything that remotely would awake my sleeping senses, I was left with disappointment. The entire movie, although supposed to be a slasher, is underplayed and cushioned. All in all, a banal movie, full of plot-holes and passable.

The Stepfather releases in Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa on the 1st of Jan, only those who want to kill a few hours or are dying with the heat and want some air conditioning might want to catch it. Or, you really love ALL kinds of movies, even the lame ones. In either case watch it at your own risk. We mean risk of boredom, by the way, be not mistaken.

Year One starts off with Zed (Jack Black) and Oh (Michael Cera) getting banished from their village because Zed eats the ‘forbidden fruit’. What follows next is their long and ridiculous journey through some of the bible’s notable events like Abraham sacrificing Issac, Caine murdering Abel. Then they get sold into slavery which brings on new twists and turns. Add to that the pursuit of their love interests and the challenge of proving themselves. Lastly, pour in a lot of in-your-face humour and you have Year One.

What’s notable about the film is that it never once tries to be anything it’s not. It continues to be juvenile, hilarious, gross and stupid and I mean this in a good way. Without pretence and full of ridiculous jokes, the movie just works. It also helps that the cast is filled with A-listers which apart from Black and Cera includes Paul Rudd, Hank Azaria, David Cross, Olivia Wilde, Vinnie Jones and Oliver Plath among many others.

The entire setting of the movie which is pre-historic from the start and then advances to biblical periods has modern day language and jokes which gives the movie a lovely flavour. Black’s hysterical behaviour compliments Cera’s dead-panned attitude which is thoroughly entertaining till the end.

The music enhances every comical setting and the performances are brilliant. Every character has done a fantastic job particularly Michael Cera with his dry dialogues. Secondly Oliver Plath as the high priest will leave you dying with laughter all the while squirming with disgust, a strange combination which Year One makes work.

Year One has circumcision jokes, vomit, poop-eating, rubbing of oil on a very hairy man and so many other funny things which makes this movie a fantastic way to spend an evening forgetting all your troubles. Delicious and stupid with funny people being extremely hilarious, a must-watch if you want to laugh your guts out.

What to watch out for : Oliver Platt as the high priest trying to molest Michael Cera at every chance he gets. Secondly, pay very close attention to his dialogues.

Year One releases in Delhi and Chandigarh on the 1st of Jan, please catch the movies whenever you can. You’ll leave the theatre feeling happy.
